A Particularly Low Class of White People: Republicans Throw Nuts at Black Folks; They Heckle the "Foreign" Delegate from Puerto Rico

Their forefathers were John Birchers. Their grand-pappies and grandmas likely spent time at the monthly lynching tree. Some of them were members of White Citizens Councils, the "polite" racists, who stood against civil rights for black folks and upheld Jim and Jane Crow. Earlier this year, the most zealous among them booed gay soldiers, howled in glee at the prospect of a person being executed by the State, and cheered the idea of some sad soul dying because they did not have health insurance.

This is the contemporary face of the Republican Party.

When Republicans heckled Zoraida Fonalledas, the representative from Puerto Rico to their own convention with nativist chants earlier today, they reminded the American people who and what they really are...again.

When a black CNN reporter had nuts thrown at her, and was told "this is how we feed the animals," the Tea Party GOP showed us who they have always been...again.

And do not buy into the excuse-making: Chants of "U.S.A." have nothing to do with an internecine conflict between Ron Paul and establishment conservatives. Rather, this episode has everything to do with white conservative xenophobia and anti-immigrant zeal by a group of mouth-breathing Right-wing troglodytes who believe that Puerto Ricans are dangerous Spanish speaking "foreigners."

In all, the racist and xenophobic ugliness on display during Tuesday's meeting of the Republican National Convention in Tampa, Florida should not be a surprise. The elites and opinion leaders of the Right have created this witches brew; now, they will either be saved by their monster or the beast will consume them.

My mother's people are from North Carolina. My grandmother and other elders would often talk about "good white people." The ability to distinguish between white people who would kill you, discriminate against you at will, or put you out of house and home because they could, was a practical life skill. We may no longer have The Negro Motorist Green Book, but black and brown folks still give their kids "the talk" about how to survive a routine traffic stop by the police. Cultural memory is deep and a gift. I am so very glad (and lucky) they passed on their wisdom and life skills. In turn, if so blessed, I will share that wisdom with my children.

It is true that white supremacy has evolved over time; but the lives of people of color are still expendable, and subject to arbitrary violence in America by White Authority (and those overly identified with it--see George Zimmerman).

For people of color in the United States, skillfully and successfully navigating the color line meant (and means) protecting your own life, as well as that of your children and family. Those of us who are not part of the in-group, or otherwise marginalized by Power, have to learn this skill set if we are to survive and do well in this society. Consequently, black and brown folks have to become expert students on the ways of white people.

I do wonder if Whiteness and White Privilege permits our white brothers and sisters to realize how much people of color know about them and their particular ways.

To point: as my parents and other elders have taught me, the "U.S.A" chanting cowboy hat wearing white populists who heckled Zoraida Fonalledas represent a particularly low class of white people. They may have money, but this group of white people has no decency. The low type of white person exemplified by the neo-John Birch base of the Tea Party GOP are also bigots. All that they have to comfort them is a weak type of nationalism which is emboldened by silly chanting, and the psychic wages of whiteness that happen to come with being arbitrarily categorized as "white" in this society.

The slogan "free, white, and twenty-one" got this class of white people through many decades of life in America. In an increasingly globalized world, with a black president, and a multicultural leadership class, such a slogan is approaching obsolescence. For many white people this is a terrifying prospect.

By comparison, Senator Priebus and Mitt Romney represent a slightly "better" class of white people. The latter is most certainly a racist. The former is likely one as well given his enabling of his party's Southern Strategy 2.0 and race-baiting against Barack Obama, the country's first black president. Together, both are "polite" racists. They have no love for what was once called "poor white trash." Elite whites such as Romney and Priebus use materially disadvantaged and racially resentful white people as a tool in order to maximize their own wealth and resources. The white reactionary populists who form the base of the Republican Party in the Age of Obama have not yet woken up to this old school con.

This brings us full circle. What of Zoraida Fonalledas? How do make sense of her awkward moment? On one hand, the better and more generous part of my soul has pity for her. It must hurt to realize that you are viewed with contempt by your own political brethren and comrades. As I suggested several here, she, and other conservatives who happen to be black, Latino, Asian, Native American, or Other, are sick with a delusion that they are "special" or "different" in the eyes of the White conservative gaze. Tuesday's happenings could perhaps be her wake up call.

The more cynical and less noble part of my soul smirks and smiles. Zoraida Fonalledas made her bed and now has to lie in it. Yes, the money and gold are substantial. Nevertheless, I struggle to understand how any self-respecting person of color could ally with the Tea Party GOP, the country's de facto White political party, and an organization whose electoral strategy increasingly consists of mining white racism and anxiety towards people of color to secure electoral victory.

I think that I will just smile. Zoraida Fonalledas experienced her own "Lisa broke Ralph's heart moment" on a national stage. The question remains: will Zoraida Fonalledas, and other non-white conservatives like her, keep coming back to the Tea Party GOP for more abuse?

I think we know the answer. They are almost to the one, sad pathetic souls.

There are no surprises here, when Zoraida Fonalledas decided quite some time ago to lie with dogs, she should’ve expected that at some point, she’d awake with a head full of fleas. These mean spirited White folks could care less about Blacks, Puerto Ricans, among other minorities, who consider themselves to be either a Republican or Tea Party member. Zoraida just happened to get a dosage of her own medicine on national/international television. None of the major political parties in this country CARE ABOUT PEOPLE OF COLOR! The only difference is that the Democratic Party is much more subtle, clever, and conceals their political extremism, so as not to suffer full exposure.

I truly feel sorry for Zoraida, however, every one of us who live life in an unconscious state, must eventually suffer the consequences of doing so. Therefore, minority members of the GOP/Tea parties, don’t be surprised when you find out that your love for a political party is not mutually returned, you could realize the full weight of the truth, while the entire world is watching!

@Thrasher, what good does it serve to be at the table and not a single person cares about you or your constituents’ issues? Indeed, Black and Brown issues will never be given a top priority status with any of these fake-ass, cabal controlled political parties in this country. Again and again, GOP/Tea party members have consistently behaved in this manner. Additionally, why do you feel that it’s so important for Black and Brown people to be at the GOP/Tea party’s table, when as soon as you speak, your voice is either drowned-out by screaming chants of “USA” (signifying White rule only) or your voice is immediately placed on mute? Thrasher, don’t you get it, the GOP/Tea party exist for the sole purpose to tend to the affairs of White/Conservative/Corporate interests? My nine year-old son has figured this out already!

@ChaunceyD, it seems as if you were taught some of the same life skills that I was taught while growing up in the state of South Carolina. The theme of these lessons was always to be cautious and on guard when dealing with White people. The circumstance in which you came in contact with them didn’t matter much at all.
In sum, just because one White man shakes your hand and gives a genuine smile, you must also be keenly aware of the White man standing behind you with a raised sledge hammer in his hand as well.

@Thrasher. What is to be gained by sitting at the table with a group of people who have made it clear they are going to win an election at the expense of black people?

@Invisible. Hear you. They are both corporatists. It is a matter of poison, and choosing it. If you want to turn the country fully over to Romney's robber barons in order to prove a point, that is your call.

So, reading the drift of most comments on this blog (which I realize come from a pretty small number of people), it sounds like Obama and the Democratic Party as a whole (leadership and membership/ supporters) are not to be trusted and have no interest in issues that concern people of color. While I don't think that's true, for argument's sake, let's say that it is. So what's your political strategy? Maybe I've not been reading here long enough to have picked up on what's already been made obvious by those who comment regularly, so my apologies if I'm asking something that's been answered repeatedly.

There is much intel and clout given even to 'tokens' who sit at the table. I have mentored hundreds of our youth who informed me that just the visuals of observing Black people in power influenced and inspired them.

I reject the premise of White Folks aa the sole masters of the universe especially here in America.. I have appeared at many events, public forums as the lone Black male and walked away with resolutions and residual impact which yielded results..

All to often we under estimate our power in America I am never in that state of mind anymore..

@ChaunceyD, I feel bad for her from a personal standpoint, not because of what she was attempting to do, that is, recruit more Puerto Ricans to become honorary, second-class White citizen via the Republican platform. It’s obvious that her request to become an honorary White member of the Republican/Tea Party was thoroughly denied in full view of the entire world. She willingly placed herself in a position to be utilized as a worn door mat and subsequently got stepped upon, as what usually happens to door mats. Only when viewed from this angle, do I pity her.

This episode is taken out of context, and your playing of the race card is highly unfortunate. Not "respectable."

At the very beginning of the vid you sent, you can hear them chanting Seat Them Now. The USA chant comes quickly after that. At 0:20 and 0:29 and 0:53 you can see people clearly saying Seat Them Now.

What preceded this moment? The breaking of rules to reduce the number of Ron Paul delegates? Could this be why the initial chant of "Seat Them Now!"?

I'm not defending the chanting of "USA" -- it was mob mentality, all right, but not for the reason you claim. They were drowning out the Ron Paul delegates, who were protesting the GOP establishment's dishonest squelching of their true strength.

This is a party which smeared its own. Remember in South Carolina during the 2000 Republican primary, Karl Rove, according to some pundits authored this poll question: "Would you be more or less likely to vote for John McCain if you knew he had fathered an illegitimate black child?" McCain had defeated W. Bush in New Hampshire and he had to be stopped in South Carolina. Rove’s strategy worked.

Just wondering do you distinguish between extra-judicial killings at home and extra-judicial killings abroad. The lives of people of color are definitely expendable in Afrika and Asia, and they are subject to arbitrary violence by White Authority. I guess that would be the “white-half” of Barack Obama.

@InvisibleMan, It’s possible that you’re partially correct on the above mentioned statement, However, the sad thing is that even in some instances when a minority Republican member know the blow is coming, they’ve been so brain-washed by that time, that some Blacks and other minorities steadfastly refuse to move and get wiped out in the process. Simply put, this doesn’t make any sense! In fact, this is essentially what happened to Zoraida, the Puerto Rican delegate less than twenty-four hours ago on national/international television. Personally, I believe that Blacks Americans in particular, along with other minorities should have their own political party in this country.

This bandwidth of white folks actually create figures like Obama, Coates,Gates etc..

@mb. as always, points appreciated. but, you are proceeding from a false assumption that obama, who is president of the u.s. and happens to be black should have any loyalty at all beyond the country's national and strategic interests. i have problems with the drone campaign because i fear blow back and you are simply killing too many innocent people. moreover, war on the cheap and the drive towards AI and semi-autonomous killing machines is just bad all around for a number of reasons.

Despite what many would argue, "black isn't a country." there is no 3rd international. as you know from my writing here i am pragmatist who is also a bit of a hawk on IR and foreign relations. Obama has an obligation to secure resources for this country and to counterbalance China in Africa. If I were advising him and it came down to killing people in order to accomplish said goals, then so be it. In the grand game it doesn't matter what color they are; the grand game cares little for such things. They could be Africans, Yemens, Afghans, or whoever. If they have something a country needs, barring their ability to stop it from being taken, they are going to lose it.

I agree with about 90% of what you wrote here, except I'm not so certain it matters whether or not these goons are too stupid to know that we Puerto Ricans are citizens. If they knew more about history in this country, they'd have even more reason to fear as "other" and to that I say "bring it on."

Coming late to a long thread; pardon the excess verbiage:

1. Blacks at the convention: I'm sure that many of them are there for good reasons, similar to what Greg has suggested. I've known many Blacks who got themselves on committees and boards where they were treated more or less courteously, they smiled through the bad parts to try to accomplish something. Good for them.

2. White Progressives: all stripes here, and many just like the 60's "not with my sister" Liberals. As has been said, pick your friends carefully.

3. Puerto Ricans: no surprise, but I love Puerto Ricans. Whether the New Right Devils like it or not, Blacks and Puerto Ricans are just as American as anybody. PR's got drafted and died just like the farm boys, and you can look up the list of Puerto Ricans who were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor (mostly posthumously, as usual).

4. Extra-Judicial Killings: I feel like you do, Professor. This drone nonsense is wrong, counter-productive and more than a little bit stupid. But I'm more concerned with E-J killings at home. Fred Hampton was a pure E-J killing. That's an old example, but the lesson is that first the Panthers were demonized, which made it okay to kill them. Just one more demon gone. Lot's of demonization going on today too, and it's a short step to killings.

“you are proceeding from a false assumption that obama, who is president of the u.s….”

CDV, that’s never been my assumption. Barack Obama, The Perfect Proxy (my original description from 2008), is doing precisely what I anticipated he would do from early on in his campaign.

“Racism is an instinctive tool to capture resources and deny them to competitor ‘species.’ This is why Obama is backed by the Wall Street bankers. To them, he is a tool to safeguard their fortunes against the rising tide of public resentment.” – Manuel Garcia (2008)

You raised the issue about the “lives of people of color are still expendable.” I was just checking to see how far your complaints about extra-judicial killings extended. Apparently they stop at the borders of the United States. Justice in your mind is obviously divisible: “If I were advising him and it came down to killing people in order to accomplish said goals, then so be it.” Then you claim to be concerned about blowback—lol.

Hey, that’s at least one point you, Obama, and Romney agree on. How many others are there?

Being a pragmatist on Obama's obligation to secure energy resources for the US as a matter of national security, at the expense of very expendable black/brown folk around the world who happen to unfortuitously occupy the ground where it is found, who for lack of a sufficient defense against those who would jockey to have it, are condemned folk any way...so what the hell...they are going to die anyhow...so let's just be hawkish about it...kill them...exploit them...without any thought about it. That's our justification? Oh, and by the way, we'll let Big OIl keep all those ungodly profits that our tax dollars subsidize and underwrite with the use of our military, while they pay negative taxes. Pragmatic?

Being pragmatic, we will also not support transforming our transportation system to an integrated rail system like China to reduce our dependence on gas and so many automobiles designed to waste gas. That's OK because we don't really care that much about killing black/brown folk for oil cause they're so expendable. In fact, there are more expendable than the finite supply of oil.

That is, and always has been the pragmatic approach to our kind of capitalism. Like the drone warfare we are engaged in, there is always the blowback. The blowback is that it inevitably comes back home to roost. Now those same drones are being deployed here because the exploiters, who are exploiting their own people with the same lack of mercy, fear the people. You are quite correct in saying that when it comes to getting what they want it doesn't matter if you are white, black, latino, Yemen, Afganistan, Iraqi, Pakistani, if you can't stop it... What do they want? Everything. The grand game cares little.

We see that same cold hawkish attitude being played out by the racists at the GOP Convention with the "others" who represent a national white security threat, as they see it, to the ever-dwindling resources of the 99%, many of whom have historically enjoyed the spoils of American White Privilege/racism. The dog whistles have indeed been heard by these poor scared stupid mongrels. Their barking at every person of color who waks by is very embarrassing.

They are wanting to bite Obama for the wrong reasons.

@Razor. I hear you. I am very concerned about the domestic implications for privacy and safety of the drone war state. That applies domestically and abroad. I also know that suspension of procedures, rules, and law at home and abroad has devastating impacts on our freedoms and security here at home.

That having been said, country's have no friends only interests. We can only hope that our leadership class makes sure that those goodies benefit all of us and not just the plutocrats as they have for most of our history.

I shake my head at the Tea Party Red State nationalism and jingoism, they send their kids off to die and/or be maimed so that the elites can line their pockets while real wages stagnate and wealth goes down the toilet.

If we had an honest and real talk president or leadership class who said offer up your young so that we can have cheaper gas, rare minerals for cell phones, computers, and video game systems, and maybe a tax deduction if you so make the bargain I would smile. That ain't gonna happen. The sheeple are not ready.

“Obama has an obligation to secure resources for this country and to counterbalance China in Africa. If I were advising him and it came down to killing people in order to accomplish said goals, then so be it.” – CDV

"Just consider this. The United States has ratified only three trade agreements in the last few years and those were negotiated in the Bush administration. China has signed 15 free trade agreements and is in the progress of negotiating as many as 18 more. Sadly we are abandoning the field of free and fair trade, and it will come back to haunt us." – Dr. Condoleezza Rice

Per CDV, who needs trade agreements when you can simply kill people with drones and take what you want.

Of course the Europeans who conquered North America, and those who eventually became the founders of the United States believed that they had an obligation to secure resources for this country and they did it via the largest forced migration in history—the Trans-Atlantic Slave Trade. From Washington to Obama, it’s the same old song; then chains, now drones.

CdV,
It looks like Senora Fonelladas had the unfortunate timing to come to the podium just as a floor fight flared between the Romney people, who were controlling the convention, and the Ron Paul people.

The Romney people had just ruled in a very dictatorial manner to unseat any Ron Paul delegates they disliked.

It was not about nativists and white supremacists shouting "USA!" at a Puerto Rican woman, ACCORDING TO THE SPANISH-LANGUAGE NETWORK UNIVISION.
Source: http://univisionnews.tumblr.com/post/30438152422/republican-national-convention-usa-chant-not-about-puert

I don't trust the dissembling explanations from Republican Convention spokesmen -- as I have seen the viciousness of "the base" during the GOP debates. They jeered a gay soldier in Afghanistan on active duty, cheered at the hundreds of executions in Texas, and shouted "Let him die!" to the dilemma of a person who had no health insurance but then came down with cancer. And the peanut-throwing incident was confirmed by the CNN female camera person. But I do trust the reporters from Univision on this story. They have reported honestly on anti-Hispanic bias in the past, when the English-language mainstream media ignored it.
