The Face of Black Nihilism Part 2: Chicago Based "Rapper" Lil Reese Caught on Video Viciously Beating a Young Girl

We discussed the problem of black nihilism and the ghetto street culture embodied by Chicago based "hip hop artist" Chief Keef and the murder of his rival "rapper" Lil JoJo a few weeks ago. Other matters intervened and we moved on to other things. It would seem that street urchin troglodyte highwaymen who want to be hip hop stars are a topic of conversation once more--this time by the Chicago Tribune.

Broken communities, broken homes, and broken families make broken people. America is a violent society. As such, I am not surprised by the vicious beating dealt out by Lil Reese upon an unidentified young girl in the above video.

However, I am fascinated by the various norms and values which are given life at the intersection of commercial hip hop and ghetto street subculture.

In the Chief Keef, Lil Jojo, Lil Reese imbroglio, we have wannabe man children who use the prefix "Lil" in front of their names, where on one hand they want to embody the virtues of hyper thug black masculinity, while holding onto some type of youth and ironic innocence. They are not likely aware of the contradiction: the Lil JoJos, Chief Keefs, and Lil Reeses of the world are stuck, like so many young black ghetto underclass men, in a hybrid and maladaptive developmental state where they want desperately to be "men," but are socialized as perpetual children, and made dependent by and upon the women in their lives.

As a result, they are feminized and live in a youthocracy and subculture where responsible adult men who have social capital beyond a four square black area are not at all present in their lives. The normal rites of passage and markers of adulthood are often not readily available to these young men--jobs and education--so, they seek out validation and meaning according to the norms of their world. Unfortunately, these norms will have them living most of their lives in prison.

Likewise, there are young women in the same communities who are taking these examples of manhood as idealized types. They lay with them, have children with them, are courted by them, and desperately seek the approval of these hyper masculine thugs. In some cases, because these young women are also products of a street culture where vulnerability and tenderness are seen as weakness, they too reproduce the very same violent hyper-masculine thug norms to the cumulative disadvantage of their communities, families, and children.

Language does political work. It embodies how power, values, and norms relate to one another in a given society.

In the video of Lil Reese beating a young girl, and then stomping her, the "provocation" would appear to be the phrase "bitch ass nigga." This is the new "faggot," the word that started so many fights when I was in high school not so long ago. However, I do not recall girls being beaten for calling boys such an ugly word.

We have another puzzle: Lil Reese, and the type of masculinity he embodies, are supposed to be so tough--what is really a guise and a mask to hide vulnerability and weakness--that a phrase, a mere suggestion, is enough to force him to act violently. Is his honor and sense of identity, and those of other men like him, that fragile?

Moreover, and this is the dark tragedy of how racism and internalized oppression are reproduced, these young people call each other "nigger" as easily and quickly as they inhale and exhale oxygen. While some engage in the gymnastics of black vernacular English, with its related and silly claims about reclaiming hate speech by subtly modifying it, I would assert that "nigger" and "nigga" are fundamentally the same word. A whole generation of people call each other most ugly word in the English language on a routine basis, but they are willing to kill each other after being called a "bitch ass" or "faggot." Bizarre.

Digital technology has destroyed the divide between the public and the private. The Black Superpublic, as a concept, and a practice, means that we can no longer police how our images are represented. The gatekeepers of black respectability have always had to struggle with this issue. As demonstrated by this video and many others, the most debased images of black and brown humanity can be recorded on a phone, uploaded, and shared around the world for consumption by a mass public. Technology has the power to reproduce white supremacist norms; technology also has the power to subvert them. In this case, Lil Reese's antics are a strong example of the former.

As the walls dividing the black private sphere and counter-public are demolished, a journal of record such as the Chicago Tribune, a white owned company, can take said images and feature them in a story. Both the traditional media (as they long have), and New Media are combining to circulate debased, degenerate, gross, and one-dimensional depictions of black humanity. Together, they reinforce some of the oldest stereotypes about black people in the United States, where we are seen by the white gaze as adults for the purposes of incarceration and punishment, but children in terms of civic belonging and behavior.

Once more I return to Cornel West, and the challenge of Black Nihilism, in order to make sense of this violence--and the street ghetto underclass culture that so many have taken to be authentically "black."

I wonder if the Lil Reeses and Chief Keefs of the world be saved? And do they want to be?
Like all Americans  African-Americans are influenced greatly by the images of comfort, convenience, machismo, femininity, violence, and sexual stimulation that bombard consumers. These seductive images contribute to the predominance of the market-inspired way of life over all others--and thereby edge out nonmarket values--love, care, service to others--handed down by preceding generations. The predominance of this way of life among those living in poverty-ridden conditions, with a limited capacity to ward off self-contempt and self-hatred, results in the possible triumph of the nihilistic threat in black America.
A major contemporary strategy for holding the nihilistic threat at bay is to attack directly the sense of worthlessness and self-loathing in black America. The angst resembles a kind of collective clinical depression in significant pockets of black America. The eclipse of hope and collapse of meaning in much of black America is linked to the structural dynamics of corporate market institutions that affect all Americans.
Under these circumstances, black existential angst derives from the lived experience of ontological wounds and emotional scars inflicted by white supremacist beliefs and images permeating U.S. society and culture. These wounds and scars attack black intelligence, black ability, black beauty, and black character in subtle and not-so-subtle ways.
The accumulated effect of these wounds and scars produces a deep-seated anger, a boiling sense of rage, and a passionate pessimism regarding America's will to justice...Sadly the combination of the market way of life, poverty-ridden conditions, black existential angst, and the lessening of fear toward white authorities has directed most of the anger, rage, and despair toward fellow black citizens, especially black women. Only recently has this nihilistic threat--and its ugly inhumane outlook and actions--surfaced in the larger American society. And it surely reveals one of the many instances of cultural decay in a declining empire.

I pray to God that this young lady’s family doesn’t allow this incident to pass without at least getting the authorities involved.

Ignorant rappers these days that engage in these types of acts are thoroughly under the control of White hegemony. Furthermore, this violent act is clearly the result of prolonged hypnotization brought to you through western mass media; the imposition of another culture’s opinion of what it means to be a man; of what it means to be “hard” in a subculture; a fractured self identity or in search of one; of what it means to successful; the result of continually being dominated and a personal sense of emptiness, unworthiness; and thoroughly uncouth.

In Lil Reese’s world, the young lady’s, “bitch ass ni**er” comment was not only a challenge, but the removal of the plinths that held his manhood (or boyhood) in an upright position. Apparently, he couldn’t go out like that in the presence of his equally dumb witted entourage.

Again, in his little world, the only way to gain the young lady’s respect and regain it amongst his homies’ as well was to commence to whipping upon her in full view of his friends.

To me, this video displays the weakness of the hard/gangsta rapper and thoroughly debunks the tough guy, thick skin, killer image. For such few words to cause a so-called hard/gangsta to go totally ballistic is sheer foolish. Again, this incident is just another snippet of the effects of long term cultural imperialism.

not to contradict, CDV, but the provocation seems to be that at least twice in the video before the brawl broke out, the girl hits or grabs the dude.

this doesn't excuse the total overreaction, but violence begets violence, and this is not a case of someone just going crazy for being called a name. this is a case of a group of short-fused individuals getting physical. still though, i have to imagine that for most civilized people, stomping on someone's head wouldn't be the effect of being smacked a couple of times.

on the other hand, the phrase "they didn't stop making guns when they made yours" is rather clever. and as always in these types of videos, the videographer decides not to intervene. bizarre.

@BS. a bunch of man children. I mean that in regards to all parties involved. degenerate culture produces degenerate behavior.

@Cnu. see my above comment. there are some epic fails all around here. this is a culture where hyperthug masculinity crosses both gender lines. the men can't lead; the women idolize the worst of the lot and then socialize their daughters and sons into said behavior.

@thor. i love it when a noted racist troll comes around. it means good things are afoot. black culture is evil? this from a devotee of Hitlerism? You all have some serious mental health issues.

@Free. see my above comments. i agree; don't hit someone unless you want to get hit back. see the Cleveland bus fight video where for my dollar the driver was spot on and within his legal rights to defend himself.

that having been said, there is a pack mentality here and one of gross cowardice. you can almost see the street highwayman troglodyte's wheels turning in his developmentally impaired and impulse control limited brain. he had to beat that girl to maintain his spot as the alpha male among his posse.

if your hold on authority and masculinity is that tenuous your identity is already compromised.

very sad.

as i often ask where were his parents when he was growing up? where are the parents of all these parties involved? i can imagine there were many other activities recorded that night too.

@CNU, So what are you attempting to say? In all likelihood this little girl probably doesn’t have a stable family background, so does that then mean she should be abused? For clarification, are you saying that this little girl deserves the violence that was inflicted upon her by that idiot Lil Reese? It appears to me that she was attempting to leave and she was prevented from doing so. Technically that was false arrest on the part of Lil Reese and his cohorts, but I’m not going to go there.

Help me to understand, what is social capital? Is it a young lady that fits the description of, and adorned with blonde hair, blue eyes and a thin nose?

You should at least help me and others on the board to understand your point because at this juncture, you’re not making any sense at all. I’ll patiently await your reply!

What I'm saying Black Sage, is that I idolize the Edo Period in Japan - where for 350 years - a true warrior culture ruled and high civilization flourished, and a loud-mouthed, obnoxious troglodyte would simply get unceremoniously cut down and culled from the population.

Not a millisecond's remorse would be wasted on the elimination of a life wholly devoid of value.

It's the exact same sentiment I expressed wrt Artis Hughes splendid chastisement of a similarly loud-mouthed troglofuggingdyte in Cleveland.

@CNU, I do agree with you that the lady that was the recipient of a super uppercut by the bus driver in Cleveland a month or so ago was justified because she spit on the bus operator. Moreover, these are two totally different scenarios. The lady on the bus was clearly drunk and a nuisance, but the little girl in the Lil Reese video was attempting to leave and she didn’t appear to be inebriated.

I understand your fascination with Japan’s Edo Period, however, what does your liking of this period has to do with this little girl that was attempting to leave Lil Reese’s vicinity?

And, what is social capital as it relates to this little girl being physically abused in the video?

@Bruto. It was a tough call; but given what it typifies and how it fit into our earlier discussion on Chief Keef's foolishness it had to stand. We cannot run away from the truth. Black nihilism is a real problem; American nihilism is a real problem.

Me thinks you are too kind. Not ghetto subculture? The casual violence, hyper thug masculinity, posturing, valorizing of this mess, weekend murder sprees? It is pretty common here in Chicago. Sad but true.

This is commercial hip hop right now--take this energy and put a beat to the underlying ethos. Keef and his people are waging a gang war to music. Hell, the joke is how it is the "world star hip hop" website. I agree this is not what hip hop as you and I understand it should be; for many this thugocracy of degenerate youth is a core audience and public. So many see these criminals as authentically black--and that includes some black people who have internalized white supremacist norms.

Inform? Look down on? You know I am interested in the politics of black respectability. One of the long running themes of the site are these very issues of black politics and behavior and comportment. I have no use for the people in this video. The thugs needs to be put in jail now to protect the innocents out there and to keep them from spreading their hell seed. The young women need some mentoring and guidance on lady like behavior and choosing better company. They could also use a good etiquette class.

I am pretty direct on these matters. Bill Cosby was right. Everyone knows it--except those sad black fools who want to defend the worst among us.

makheru bradley said...

@BrunoAlto I don’t know what qualifies as “commercial hip hop,” but “Lil Durk and Lil Reese made the announcement that they both signed solo deals with Def Jam in April, and Young Chop announced his signing with Warner Brothers in April also, but Chief Keef did not announce his deal with Interscope until June. Label executives wanted him so bad that they were willing to put his team on to prove their loyalty.” Promoting self-destructive violence is obviously profitable, the human consequences be damned.

As for ghetto subculture: “Over the past few years, Chief Keef’s Englewood neighborhood has experienced almost 150 deaths. Being a 16-year-old kid on house arrest in this deadly community, creating songs like “Bang” while pantomiming firing a gun and reciting lyrics such as “choppas get let off, they don’t want no war, throwing clips from the 4-5 gotta go back to the store,” he makes it easy to imagine that the people who are sparking the violence in the city look similar to him and have a similar background.”

These young people live, eat, and breathe violence. At some point their actions are guaranteed to generate some form of retaliation such as this: http://bit.ly/UTrg2D

The most interesting thing in the Reese incident is that none of the young men in the room attempted to stop him, not even as he was stomping the young lady. In most of these types of videos we see crowd urging on the combatants. Reese could have killed the young lady he was stomping. If not her, it’s not hard to imagine him killing someone else or being killed.

I don’t know how many people saw the story earlier this week about Justin and Dante Robinson being charged with murdering 12-year-old Autumn Pasquale in New Jersey for her bicycle.

Call it the Collateral Damage Syndrome, the Residual Effects of Slavery or whatever, but there is a certain pathology in the air of American culture that causes far too many people to become so spiritually desensitized that a human beings life is considered to be nothing more than an object—an object for the most petty material gain; for manipulation; exploitation; gratification, etc. Death is glorified, and rewarded in video games. Violence is the only solution to a problem. The person who was killed was deserving of death, e.g.--Lil JoJo. It starts at the top: “The greatest purveyor of violence in the world today -- my own government,” and permeates the whole society.

Any way you look at it, this is a tough nut to crack.

'The eminent criminal psychologist and creator of the widely used Psychopathy Checklist paused before answering. "I think, in general, yes, society is becoming more psychopathic," he said. "I mean, there's stuff going on nowadays that we wouldn't have seen 20, even 10 years ago. Kids are becoming anesthetized to normal sexual behavior by early exposure to pornography on the Internet. Rent-a-friend sites are getting more popular on the Web, because folks are either too busy or too techy to make real ones. ... The recent hike in female criminality is particularly revealing. And don't even get me started on Wall Street."'

I have to confess that I do not understand the common bourgeois black American response to things like this. To suggest that people like Lil’ Reese denigrate "black humanity" is to imply that we, as black people, are somehow “connected.” But why is it that middle-class black Americans only feel “connected” to other, poorer blacks when the latter do something stupid? I am always puzzled by the limits of this middle-class black American ethnocentrism. If you feel that the behavior of the Lil’ Reeses and Chief Keefs of the world reflects poorly on you, that is, if the nihilistic shenanigans of a misguided few can so easily tar the image of the oh so upstanding many, then isn’t it in your best interest to bring these folks up to your level? If we cannot all be truly free until the folks at the bottom have hope and more reasons to live then why does the black middle-class callously turn its back on the other half of “black humanity” and transfer its intellectual, cultural, and financial capital to white neighborhoods and institutions? Why doesn't the black middle-class take responsibility for black communities instead of abandoning them? Could it be that they have been too selfish and lazy to engage in the hard work of community building and intellectual uplift described by W.E.B. Dubois in his pivotal essay “The Talented Tenth”? Could it be that the black underclass is nothing more than a convenient scapegoat for people who, despite all their talk of pride, self-respect, and self-hate, really want nothing more than to assimilate into white society? Do these middle-class Negroes ever stop to think that if they defend their native ground—culturally, politically, and economically—they might actually obtain the respect from white society they so desperately crave?

"I ain't see a dayyum thing in that apartment that one hellfire missile couldn't cleanly and permanently resolve."

See what I mean? The pathology is pervasive. That statement typifies the American 'disposition'. "Nevermind the collateral damage. There are no innocents in the attack zone." When the only thing in your arsenal is a hammer, everything looks like a nail. As in Afghanistan, so in the Ghetto.

JM said...

@Black Sage

I appreciate your response, but that dog don't hunt. The black middle class began abandoning black neighborhoods and cities altogether long before the "drug crazed crack head" came on the scene in the 1980s. These demographic shifts began as early as 1968 in many places.

Secondly, all black urban areas are not overrun with crackheads. There are viable black neighborhoods in many major cities where decent, working-class people would love to see a return of their somewhat more successful brethren. Instead, these viable neighborhoods are being settled by white gentrifiers who do not share the black middle-class' obsession with giant homes, gas guzzlers, and Reverend Ike style mega churches or its extreme fear of "drug-crazed crack heads." If middle-class white folks can see the beauty and advantages of many black urban areas why, pray tell, can't middle class black folk?

Lastly, your argument still doesn't explain why the black middle-class has not done its own community building away from the so-called ghetto or in other sectors. If you go into a middle-class Jewish neighborhood you will find ethnically themed community centers and other important cultural institutions that celebrate politics and the arts. You don't see this in middle class-black areas. This group also has not harnessed its financial capital to build black-owned businesses. So, again, I ask you and Chauncey, why does middle-class black ethnocentrism only rear its head in discussions of the negative behavior of the black underclass? I see very little evidence of ethnic pride and self-respect among large swaths of the black middle class. Instead of focusing on the so-called "self-hate" within the underclass, we should look in the mirror.

One cannot think without deep sympathy of the men who were damned by fate to predict a collapse for over a decade now - without being heard and therefore without being able to help - to have to witness the most tragic catastrophe of black people. Aged, grieving, and embittered, yet filled with the idea that they must help, they will try after the downfall of the imperial government to assert their influence in the renewal of black people, but for a number of reasons, this effort will fail.

How comes it that you have lost your ability to organize an expression of power that- if it is to be effective - must be more than a written protest. So you wish to make a thousand improvements but cannot even decide on a single step!

Healing the black body politic of a profound and serious sickness does not involve finding a prescription that is completely non-toxic, rather, it is not uncommon to counteract one poison with another.

In order to eliminate circumstances that are recognized as deadly, one must have the courage to push through and implement decisions that also harbor inherent dangers.

A political leader who wishes to make history must decide on a certain path, even if sober consideration says a thousand times that this path also holds dangers and may not lead to a completely satisfactory outcome. If failure to act means certain disaster for black people, you cannot refrain from taking a step simply because it may not be a complete one.

Black people have been ambushed from within and without by a pack of looting enemies. The continuation of this situation will be the death of black people.

Weak-assed jiggaboos are not committed to genuine and profound black partisanship because they do not see a community of people who are connected by blood, united by language, and subject to the same collective fate. Weak-assed jiggaboos do not love black people because they can't even directly, authoritatively and sincerely define the meaning of the term "black people". If you loved black people, you would hate a certain cancerous minority within black people and would not for even one moment see this diseased element as representing either the greatness or the happiness of black people.

Consequently, weak-assed jiggaboos are not ready to pursue the goals of the external and internal liberation of black people.

Nothing less than the systemic support of its best individuals and its best virtues will serve to elevate black people to a higher level.

Nothing less than the ruthless elimination of its cancerous elements and the simultaneous promotion of ethics and ways corresponding to the vital essence of the best of black people will suffice to bring to bear our fundamental strengths.

Your a over weight (bet paper money divorced) coward, too scared to get in the game. Keep watching on TV, who knows you may see me and get a shout out.

uh.., last I checked, this is a black owned blog and I'm talking directly to you about you.

I read your rants and can only dream

that the truth of my comments didn't hit you squarely in the forehead and hurt your feelings all the way down to the soles of your feet.

Paraphrasing CNu:
blahblahblah

Staymad, one could almost hear Hitler talking directly.to.you.and.Thrasher - being as you are both aged, grieving, and embittered;

I couldn't waste my time thinking of something witty to say, so I jez sez blahblahblah. Somebody's got to stand up against your inanities an since Thrasher has been exiled, guess I'll have to do it. Though I'm not as good at it as Thrasher. So rather than a coherent response you have to make do with blahblahblahblah. I aint glib. I aint loquacious but I will do the best I can. This valorous visitation of a by-gone vexation, stands vivified and has vowed to vanquish the venal and virulent vermin vanguarding vice and vouchsafing the violently vicious and voracious violation of volition. The only verdict is vengence; a vendetta, held as a votive, not in vain, for the value and veracity of such shall one day vindicate the vigilant and the virtuous... Verily, this vichyssoise of verbiage veers most verbose.

CNu said...

Staymad,

To what specifically are you referring as inane?

and,

Why exactly do you feel you must "stand against" it?

Are you captain save-a-ho for the useless agitprop minstrel lil'Reese (black folks being attacked from without) and the little troglodytette he stomped out? (black folks being attacked from within)

Sorry, I meant me n Bruto.

See now, u tryin to make me compose shit. I'm against scapegoating n eugenics. Plus I always liked that speech.

nomad said...

So, CNu, what'd u think of the article on psychopaths?http://chronicle.com/article/The-Psychopath-Makeover/135160/

CNu said...

The "psychopath" is a rather well defined and now explicitly measurable human neurotype. I didn't link that specific article because I didn't think it broke any new ground.

That said, if one is even just a little familiar with human history, and contemporary ethology (game theory/chicken/hawks-doves) then it becomes fairly obvious that psychpaths have been and continue to be the primary authors of human history - exerting a degree of influence completely out of proportion with their numbers in any population.

nomad said...

Hear here. I only recently discovered this phenomenon so I am having to revise my interpretation of history. Getting in touch with my inner psychopath.

CNu said...

Trust me, if it hasn't gotten in touch with you, and fairly early in life, then it's not in your nature...,

Though the diversity of human neurotypes is greater than what I'm calling out to your attention, the broad masses are primarily comprised of autistic and schizophrenic spectra - ruled by representatives from that disproportionally influential minority of profoundly indifferent reptilians we term "psychopaths".

nomad said...

I'm sure you're right. I don't know much about the subject but right now I am hypothesizing a reptilian core that can be activated in all of us. David Icke's "ME ME ME".

A nation ruled by psychopaths is a nation of psychopaths.

"what’s been taking place in the Middle East and North Africa, and America’s direct and indirect involvement in all that, is not some fantasy entertainment costing you less than twenty dollars and with the remote control in your hand so that you may watch it at your leisure.

People have suffered and died out there, Man; by the hundreds, thousands and millions, and continue to suffer and die. Believe it or not, these are real people not actors or computer generated figures, they bleed red blood the same color as ours, they grieve over their dead and shed real tears, and they also have hope for their futures and the fate of their children. And, as strange as it seems, they actually get pissed off at us when we interrupt their lives or cut off their access to the necessities of life, including medicines for their sick.

And we are so shocked that some of them object to our actions and even dare to threaten to defend themselves, like the wild animals they are, if we attack them. They are perhaps too stubbornly dense for not realizing that their resisting us or attempting to retaliate against our attack would constitute an act of terrorism in our books – our books, the only books that count!"

Chauncy, I agree with so much of what you write, but I disagree with this labelling of Black underclass people as "troglodytes". They are the ones on the front lines of the battle, hit the hardest by this racist culture. We have to lift them up, not demonize them.

I don't agree that the young black men do these vile things because the times are crazy. Rather, the times are crazy because the men do these things. This ultra hostility spewing from the rap world into the rest of society is a poison. Coleman Hawkins and Lester Young didn't kill each other.
Eubie Blake and Jelly Roll Morton didn't kill each other.
Fats Waller and Art Tatum didn't kill each other.
Count Basie and Duke Ellington didn't kill each other.
Otis Rush and Albert Collins didn't kill each other.
Son House and Mississippi John Hurt didn't kill each other.
Miles Davis and Fats Navarro didn't kill each other.
Louis Armstrong and Roy Eldridge didn't kill each other.
Little Richard and Chuck Berry didn't kill each other.
The Spinners and Tavares didn't kill each other.
Earth, Wind, And Fire and P-Funk didn't kill each other.

...and no one thought them any less black or any less a man.

@Big. I hear your love. How do you uplift them? Is the ship not sinking and the waterproof doors need to be closed?

@Sanity. Real talk. And those old blues men lived through far harsher times than this generation of ign'ts. What has freedom spawned?

At least you didn't fall for that in-the-house imposter.

And man, you're almost whiter than me.

Lol!

You're still a nasty lil' nigel, though.

Man, this whole post reeks of radical "black" autonomy.

Must be a lil' Kweefin' goin' on 'round hur.

oh, let me see.

Black nihilism is caused by...?

White Supremacy.

Of course. Get that Mr. West a D,R and P,H,D.

Finally, we have a full accounting of lil' Kweef's actions.

Break through brilliance.

Dear Nigel, I judge you by your skin color because it tells me exactly how you think.

People are people and should know right from wrong. WHy doesn't the community rise up against this type of behaviour and teach their kids right?
