Instead of White Surfer Jesus, Which Heavy Metal Guitarist of the 1970s Should the History Channel Have Cast as the Lead in The Bible TV Series?

In our earlier discussion of White Surfer Jesus on the History Channel TV series The Bible, long-time commenter here on We Are Respectable Negroes, Miles Ellison, observed how:

"Any time Jesus doesn't look like a '70 heavy metal guitarist, white people lose their shit."

Sounds like a game to me. You educated me on Jim Croce and folk rock. Likewise, I am a bit weak in my knowledge of 1970s heavy metal rock guitarists. Teach a brother something.

Which heavy metal (or rock musician more generally) would you nominate from the 1970s or any other era as a stand-in for Jesus?

  1. The leading nominee, given the current climate, would be Ted Nugent circa Scream Dream. A more obscure choice would be Frank Marino, but that would outrage people because he's Canadian.

  2. Facial hair? No facial hair? Curly, wavy or straight? How would you like your Jesus served up?

Not quite heavy metal, but I think Peter Frampton fits the bill, especially since his character in the Sgt. Pepper motion picture dies and is resurrected. I think this picture will prove my point.

  7. Google images of Kim Thayil from the heyday of Soundgarden. late 1980s-early 1990s. His parents are from India and with his hair and beard at its longest, he probably looks more like JC than anybody else in pop culture.

  9. You are a known Canadaphile. Your opinions on white American heavy metal Jesus hold no weight!

  10. There's an obscure guitarist named Guthrie Govan who looks like the Hollywood idea of Jesus. He's British, though.

  11. I think jesus should look more like the actor portraying satan in the mini series, Mohamen Mehdi Ouazanni.

And satan should actually look like what most white people perceive as the most attractive and approachable person.

Someone like Chris Evans, Rob Pattinson or Chris hemsworth (with long hair) should be depicted as satan..

  12. Ian Fraser "Lemmy" Kilmister of Motorhead should have portrayed jesus. I can just imagine jesus giving this exact pose during the crucifixion scene !!!

It gets no better than this !!!

Frampton's a Brit, but I take your point. BTW- your original post on this show was spot on. The picture Bible I had as a child depicted Jesus as blonde and blue eyed, more Aryan-looking than any other person in the book. Speaking of Aryan-looking, in Nazi Germany there was a group calling themselves the "German Christians" who gained power in the church and who held that Jesus wasn't even a Jew, but an Aryan. The White Jesus of American religious practice doesn't go quite that far, at least overtly. Still, it's not that far off.
